Director Zhang Yimou brings the sumptuous visual style of his previous films (Raise the Red Lantern, Shanghai Triad) to the high-kicking kung fu genre. A nameless warrior (Jet Li, Romeo Must Die, Once Upon a Time in China) arrives at an emperor’s palace with three weapons, each belonging to a famous assassin who had sworn to kill the emperor. As the nameless man spins out his story–and the emperor presents his own interpretation of what might really have happened–each episode is drenched in red, blu, white or another dominant color. Hero combines sweeping cinematography and superb performances from the cream of the Hong Kong cinema (Maggie Cheung, Irma Vep, Comrades: Almost a Love Story; Tony Leung Chiu-Wai, In the Mood for Love, Hard Boiled; and Zhang Ziyi, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon). Disney gives families a gift full of the spirit of the season as Ed Asner plays Horace McNickle, a counterfeiter who escapes prison through his extraordinary likeness to St. Nick. The police are closing in, but Christmas is near so there are red-suited ones everywhere. McNickle is desperate to recover loot from an earlier caper, and can’t make a move until he takes advantage of two neighborhood kids who really believe he is Santa. After the kids come through, it dawns on him that he has always missed the tru meaning of the holidays. Rather than make good on his escape, he tries to make good on his promises.

Shot in Britain, the Scottish Highlands, and a quasi-Caribbean corner of Italy, The Master of Ballantrae has a goofy charm reminiscent of certain Michael Powell movies–a comparison encouraged by Jack Cardiff’s magic-hour Technicolor and an exuberant costar turn for Roger Livesey. Something of an autumnal swashbuckler for Errol Flynn, it’s also the last film for William Keighley, the starting director on Adventures of Robin Hood 15 years earlier. The Robert Louis Stevenson tale hop-skip-jumps through Bonnie Prince Charlie’s bid to reclaim Scotland, the ensuing English crackdown, a bloody falling-out between brothers (Flynn and Anthony Steel), two overlapping romantic triangles, two assumed deaths (same guy), piracy on the high seas, yo-ho-ho in Tortuga, then back to Ballantrae for several showdowns–all in 89 minutes. Call it picaresqu or just cockeyed, this amiable entertainment deserves rescuing from oblivion. Likewise the post-pretty-boy Flynn, whose jaded bonhomie plays into the quirky mix. –Richard T. Jameson

![Review of Out of Sight - DTS Online]()
Out of Sight was one of the best movies of 1998, but ironically this superior crime comedy was a box-office disappointment. Fortunately the movie can enjoy a long life on home video, where it can be savored by anyone who missed its original release. Making his best film since 1989’s sex, lies, and videotape, director Steven Soderbergh pays tribute to the signature wit and intricacy of Elmore Leonard’s novel, brilliantly adapted by Scott Frank, the gifted screenwriter who previously adapted Leonard’s Get Shorty. The movie’s a prime showcase for the talent and chemistry of George Clooney and Jennifer Lopez, respectively playing a career bank robber who’s escaped from jail and the federal agent who falls for his charms while tracking him down. Soderbergh directs with confident visual flair, shifting time- lines (a la Pulp Fiction) to weave together subplots and maintain vivid focus on Leonard’s splendid characters and smooth-as-silk dialogu. While the sexy repartee between Clooney and Lopez recalls the vintage interplay of Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall, Ving Rhames and Steve Zahn add ample comic relief as Clooney’s accomplices. Dennis Farina is memorable as Lopez’s father, and Albert Brooks is almost unrecognizable as a Wall Street crook whose mansion–and a cache of uncut diamonds–provides the setting for the film’s climactic caper. As orchestrated by Soderbergh, the film offers a feast of plot twists and surprises, but it never loses track of its delightful characters and the clever wit that brings them so vividly to life. –Jeff Shannon
